Belief in the power of God, plus enough willingness, honesty and humility to establish and maintain the new order of things, were the essential requirements

 In the Big Book on page 14, in the top paragraph, it tells us what we need to successfully work the program. It says that, "Belief in the power of God, plus enough willingness, honesty and humility to establish and maintain the new order of things, were the essential requirements." In the next paragraph, it says, "Simple, but not easy; a price had to be paid. It meant destruction of self-centeredness. I must turn in all things to the Father of Light who presides over us all." On page 44, in the third paragraph, it further says that, "At first some of us tried to avoid the issue, hoping against hope we were not true alcoholics. But after a while we had to face the fact that we must find a spiritual basis of life—or else."
