AA never truly abandons the "obsession" idea, a concept that is no less magical than will power, however, the route to relief from the obsession goes through pragmatic processes. It outflanks the habitual way of thinking that has formed the alcoholic character by involving the alcoholic in activities which resemble normal social behavior. The alcoholic must apologize and offer physical or monetary restitution to those he has injured in the past. Each such act is approached individually, and the phrase, "one day at a time" emphasizes that the alcoholic is not to concern himself generally with becoming honest, hard working, and humble, but with doing today those specific acts which constitute his AA program.
