In the study, couples filled out questionnaires about their marriages and submitted saliva and blood samples. Researchers found a correlation between attachment anxiety—worrying about rejection and constantly seeking reassurance that your partner still loves you—and lower levels of T-cells, an important part of the immune system.Researchers found couples who felt more insecure and anxious showed an 11 percent increase in levels of cortisol (the stress hormone), which can in turn hinder production of T-cells.
Relationship stress is almost as dangerous to your immune system as obesity, says lead study author Lisa Jaremka, Ph.D., a postdoctoral fellow at Ohio State’s Institute for Behavioral Medicine Research. So when you literally worry yourself sick, you’re depleting cells that play a crucial role in fighting off any disease, pathogen, virus, and illness, Jaremka says.
