Eating two tomatoes a week may be a natural remedy for depression, according to Medical Daily on Dec. 6. A team of researchers analyzed health records of older individuals and found those who included the fruit in their diet regularly were less likely to have depression.

It appears the tomato may act as an antidepressant. The study’s finding will be published in the January 2013 issue of theJournal of Affective Disorders.

Unlike other fruits and vegetables, when people ate the tomato every day, the risk of depression was reduced by 52 percent. The study also showed that the people who ate tomatoes two to six times per week were 46 percent less likely to develop depressionthan those who ate them less than once a week.

What individuals choose to eat has a direct effect on their emotional, mental and physical health. The self awareness of dietary 'needs' verses dietary 'wants' is an example of a vicious intrapersonal circle. It is said we crave foods our bodies need in terms of nutritional value, but we also desire the sweets and ‘junk’ food that is detrimental to our well-being, many times just to feed our moods, including depression.

How to tell the difference between physical and emotional hunger

Eating a healthy and well balanced diet is imperative for emotional health. When a person is an emotional eater, it compounds the negative feelings already present within that person. The term “emotional eating” refers to individuals who eat to feed their feelings. It may be a subconsciousattempt to use foods as an antidepressant. When people feel depressed or have depression, many turn to unhealthy foods for comfort.

Tomatoes are not usually considered a comfort food, but it is a healthy fruit (not a vegetable) which are used in various recipes and can be eaten alone. The tomato has been consumed since the Mayans discovered it, as it is rumored.

It could be possible the Mayans were aware of the antioxidant properties of the tomato all along as a natural antidepressant for depression.
