Mayor Guiliani went after the small offenders -- the graffitti, vandalism, minor crime. That had a huge impact on larger crimes. Same with the spiritual life. We want all of the big concepts as a kind of diversion away from our responsibility to pay attention to the little sins that we commit, sometimes only in our minds, that get us off track. We have a very strong tradition in that, but it has fallen into disuse.
