Everyone has a spirit—that God-shaped place in your soul that is touched and filled by beauty, awe, and stillness.  It’s the most authentic part of you so it’s also the most vulnerable and the most wounded from pathology.  Our souls were not created to be in the presence of pathology. They were created to be in the presence of love. <br /><br />We were created for the touch of authentic love and for the connection to what is sacred. Pathology is not sacred. Whether you are ‘religious’ or not you were still created by the Sacred, for the Sacred, and to express the Sacred.  You were not created to express the aftermath of pathology. Aftermath symptoms should not feel ‘at home’ in your soul. They aren’t ‘at home.’<br /><br />Midway through the aftermath carnage you are probably feeling anything BUT a spiritual connection to anything. It’s no accident that pathology wounds at the soul level—that evil targets those with the most beautiful souls once full of infinite giving and over flowing grace.  Pathology/The Dark Side/Evil knows to dismantle your spirit is to unplug you from what made you the amazing gift you are. And to deflate the once full soul that was sharing love with others—the ultimate power on the planet—is to spiritually deflate our world. <br /><br />But survivors often lament that recovery feels like a stand-still where you wait for restoration ‘to arrive,’ ‘to ascend or descend,’ ‘to overtake you,’ ‘to fall gently’ upon you.  The death blow to your soul by “The Soul Slayer” is by far the worst damage. An inability to feel that God-shaped part is the worst numbness that a soul can experience. You look Heaven-ward praying for one flicker of a sense that your soul has survived the scourge of pathology. <br /> <br />Why isn’t God restoring me? Why do I still have the ‘monkey-mind’ of cognitive dissonance (He’s Good/He’s Bad)? Why is there no mental stillness—just a rush of adrenaline, the exhaustion of a mind running like an engine? <br /><br />Sometimes our concept of recovery is replacement. That our feelings of loss will be replaced with joy, our lost pathological partner will be replaced with a healthier partner, our lost income that he stole will be replaced with a provision to get us through, our depression will be replaced with neurotransmitters. ‘Replacement’ recovery concepts are like a McDonald’s drive through. You read a book on pathology and try to simply replace mental concepts that got you in the relationship. You join a chat forum and try to replace loneliness with internet distraction.  It’s no wonder people are often confused about what recovery ‘is’ and when and how they will ‘get there.’<br /><br />But true authentic recovery that would touch the deepest part of you at a soul level is not about replacement. It’s about restoration—the restoring of the soul that guides your emotions, your choices, your capacity for joy, love and beauty. You can’t ‘replace’ a soul which is ultimately what has been damaged by the soul-less attack of pathology. But you can restore the ‘seat’ or the ‘soul’ of you from the carnage of darkness. </p>

I graduated aged 90 you're never too old to learn

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"> Becoming a postgraduate at 90, as I did by graduating this year from the University of Buckingham with an MA in intelligence history, might invoke the expression "late starter", but such things do not necessarily happen suddenly, and are often the culmination of a long process. My higher education formally began when I was in my 60s (I left school at 14 in 1935), as I had not previously had an opportunity to study before my retirement and the advent of the wonderful Open University.<br /> <br /> But long before then, first working in the Temple as a barrister's clerk, and then joining the wartime RAF, my eyes were opened to a broader culture than that offered by my south-east London street. An innate curiosity and a seemingly insatiable thirst for knowledge accounted for the rest. In short, I have come late to formal higher education, but have lived a lifetime of learning. But how did my decision affect me? And would I advise other retirees to do the same? Well, I've had no material gain as a result. On the strength of my BA in psychology, there followed a volunteer job as a drugs counsellor. There were significant disadvantages to acquiring my two undergraduate degrees – six years of constant hard work entailing virtual obsession with the course for most of the year is bound to affect domestic relationships. It did, but we survived – even though the divorce rate among Open University students is rumoured to be above average.<br /> <br />  However, I think the spiritual and intellectual benefits far outweighed the disadvantages. Indeed, I was not really looking forward to attending my first seminar, worried about what to expect, but I needn't have been – my fellow students (about 20 of them) immediately put me at ease. Two nice young ladies moved apart and offered me a chair between them. What a relief. The camaraderie between students is well known, and it was very much in evidence here. I made many friends among them, and they seemed to treat me no differently than any other, except for one big Kenyan lad who insisted on calling me "sir". Their average age was in the mid-20s, and I am still in touch with some of them.<br /> <br /> The University of Buckingham attracts more than its share of students from all over the world – there were Americans, Chinese, Nigerians – and meeting them and enjoying their company was an unexpected bonus. The most memorable thoughts I have of the university experience (which I sorely miss), were the wonderful seminars, especially when my old-fashioned, non-PC views would sometimes cause a friendly uproar among the students. I did enjoy that. When asked at the time of graduation what I had hoped to achieve, my answer was to delay the onset of senility, if it was not already too late. My more polite friends tell me that all the studying worked, and that my faith in exercising the mind was justified. One of the many bonuses is that documentaries and educational broadcasts, which previously might have gone above my head, have been transformed from boring discourses to exciting and enjoyable events – although it can be a little disconcerting when you watch a historical programme and realise that you were present at the events, causing you to be re-involved more intimately and yet more objectively than when they originally occurred.<br /> <br />  I am not aware of any deep-seated reason for undertaking the MA. Presumably a continuing wish to learn exists, and a chance to put it into practice presented itself when my wife showed me an invitation from the University of Buckingham to apply for a master's course on the history of intelligence with Bletchley Park studies. She said it seemed right up my street, and that as we had recently discussed the need for a new direction – why not take it? The relevant background was that my last job was at Hanslope Park (I am a qualified electronics engineer), an organisation that took over from Bletchley Park at the end of the war. These circumstances rekindled my dormant curiosity . I applied and was accepted. So would I recommend a return to formal learning past retirement? <p>Depression is insidious. You feel sad, you lose your concentration, nothing is interesting to you anymore, and – to top it all off – your thoughts become stuck in an endless loop of self-criticism. There are many ways to address depression. Researchers interested in decreasing depression and increasing resilience have found that using a number of intentional activities creates positive emotions and helps reduce feelings of depression. The first step, though, is to work toward letting go of the critical rumination going on in your head. Why? Because it is very difficult to even consider pursuing intentional activities with thoughts such as: “It won’t help.” “Why even bother?” “I’ll just screw it up.” These thoughts make your mood bleaker and keep you on the sofa rather than feeling up for trying a new activity or intervention. So, what to do? Use mindfulness. Now, to a depressed person, even the encouragement to be mindful can sound like a daunting challenge. “Oh, great. Something else to learn and mess up.” But wait. Here’s all you have to do: Just notice something and have no judgment about it. So, when you hear yourself think something like, “Why even bother?” you just notice the thought. You don’t decide if it’s good or bad, you just take note and then let it go. Life coach Rick Carson calls these negative thoughts “gremlins.” In his book, Taming Your Gremlin, Carson refers to the wise words of the Chinese philosopher, Lao Tzu: Simply notice the natural order of things. Work with it rather than against it. For to try to change what is only sets up resistance. Carson bases much of his work on this idea: Simply notice. Don’t judge. Don’t place meaning. Just notice your thoughts and let them go. Same with your moods. Simply notice that you’re depressed. No need to place any particular import or opinion on it. Just notice it. This practice of simply noticing is very freeing. One of the key ideas in Carson’s book is don’t grapple with your gremlins. As soon as you start wrestling with the critical thought in your head – your gremlin – it wins. The gremlin gets bigger and more powerful the longer you grapple with it. Just noticing your thought or mood and having no judgment about it takes all the power away from it. The authors of The Mindful Way Through Depression: Freeing Yourself from Chronic Unhappiness, encourage us to view thoughts as “passing mental events” that come and go and that don’t necessarily equate to true reality. They write: Thoughts involve interpretations and judgments, which are not in themselves facts; they are merely more thoughts . . . This ever-so-simple, yet challenging, shift in the way we relate to thoughts releases us from their control. For when we have thoughts such as ‘This unhappiness will always be with me’ or ‘I am an unlovable person,’ we don’t have to take them as realities. When we do, we succumb to endlessly struggling with them. (pp. 59-60) Want to take the important first step in bouncing back from depression? Simply notice your thoughts and moods without judgment. The sense of freedom will be worth it.</p>

Is Coca-Cola the new cigarette? Soda industry fight looking a lot like cigarette industry one over past decades

<p>A number of studies have linked soft drinks, including diet ones, to type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, increased cancer risk and obesity. Last month a woman even died after drinking eight litres of Coke every day. All of these negative reports may be contributing to about a 30 per cent drop in the sales of soft drinks in Canada, but producers are taking steps to prevent this from cutting into profits. Coca-Cola, Pepsi and other rivals jointly took out an ad in the New York Times last week to promote their calorie-cutting efforts. And Canadian divisions are following suit with packaging that clearly shows the calorie count in a can or bottle. This comes a day after the British Medical Journal published a study showing that adding a high tax on unhealthy food and drinks may slow rising obesity rates. United Nations' special rapporteur Olivier De Schutter also called for a tax on soft drinks in Ottawa on Wednesday. But the soda industry in Canada is saying they are being unfairly blamed. "Obesity is caused by an over-consumption of calories from all sources," said the association's director of communications Stephanie Baxter to the Toronto Star. "There is no one particular product that can be blamed." With new packaging and calorie cutting, it's hard not to see a similarity between the soft drink industry now and the cigarette industry from a few decades ago. When studies began to show the negative effects of smoking, the industry fought it with a number of court battles, arguing they had no part in the death of people who smoked. While cigarette packages must now display large, gross images and most people are well aware of correlation between smoking and cancer, Canadians continue to light up. According to the Canadian Tobacco Use Monitoring Survey, the smoking rate has dropped to about 17 per cent from 25 per cent in 1999. However, according to a CBC article, Neil Collishaw of Physicians for a Smoke-Free Canada said the number of current smokers is closer to 20 per cent. So it's clear that some smokers will continue to puff regardless of the health risks associated with the habit or the packaging changes intended to discourage smoking. To avoid cancer warnings on soda cans in California, Coca-Cola has begun modifying their recipe in the U.S. This change will eventually come north of the border and the company said consumers will not notice a change in taste. However, avid consumers may balk at the healthy change if the taste is noticeably different. Maybe it's time for Coca-Cola to put the health risks on the pack and let the consumer decide. Like cigarettes, packaging may not affect sales. As far as health risks go, a can of Coke doesn't seem that bad compared to many of the energy drinks out there. And even if people are worried about the affects of cigarettes or soft drinks, they can drink their coffee. A new study found coffee drinkers seemed a little more likely to live longer than folks who drank no coffee at all.</p>

Overcome Poor Self-Confidence: Visualization

<p>Emotionally sensitive people are often creative and able to think outside the box. When it comes to solving problems though, their emotions can get in the way of using their strengths.</p><p>Problems can be upsetting, and emotionally sensitive people tend to get easily discouraged, so they avoid problems or spend so little thinking about solutions that they have little hope the solutions are out there.</p><p>Others have the idea that problems are easier to solve than they are and so they blame themselves when they aren’t able to come up with solutions quickly and easily. They may see the difficulty they are experiencing as a reflection of their being broken or inadequate in some way, such as being too inconsistent or not smart enough or too lazy.</p><p>Usually, the character flaw the emotionally sensitive are certain they have comes from people telling them that negative events happened in their life because they are a certain way. When you’re told that at a young age it often becomes true at such a deep level you don’t question it.  Others don’t face problems because they don’t want the tension or fear that comes with problems.</p><p><span id="more-2483"> </span></p><p>Understanding some of the best strategies to use when problems occur can help overcome those reactions. In the book, Solving Life’s Problems, the author talks Marvin Levine’s ideas about limited ability. Levine says that there are three important activities for the mind during problem solving: taking in information, retrieving the needed information and putting the pieces together. Often, however, we can’t do all of these well at the same time.</p><p>When we try to remember information, we are limited in understanding the whole picture and how it all fits together. The brain can only do so much at one time.</p><p>If you’re anxious and worried that you can’t solve the problem, or that the situation is a negative judgment of your character, then the task becomes understandably overwhelming. In addition, people who are not invalidating themselves are not likely to understand why you are overwhelmed. That adds to your negative judgment of yourself and makes the whole process more difficult the next time you have a problem to solve.</p><p>Levine has suggestions for helping the mind be more efficient. These suggestions seem particularly important for the emotionally sensitive.</p><p>Externalization</p><p>We will likely do better at remembering information, taking in data, and putting facts together in a meaningful way if we write down the important points. The mind is then freed freed from having to remember and can concentrate on creative solutions. So make lists of the important points, draw diagrams of the connections between facts and write down your priorities. You can also write down possible solutions, likely outcomes of those solutions, and the pros and cons of those solutions.</p><p>Overcome Poor Self-Confidence: Visualization</p><p>Low self-confidence in problem solving, as well as fear and other less desired emotions, leads people to give up or avoid the problem solving process. Levine recommends using visualization. First, visualize your life as it might be after you have solved the problem. For now, don’t think about how you will solve the problem. This can help you develop hopefulness. Hope is critical.</p><p>The authors of Solving Life’s Problems quote Victor Frankl (Man’s Search for Meaning) who said that the ability to visualize the future is “salvation in the most difficult moments of our existence.”  When he was in the Nazi concentration camp, he often visualized his life after he was released. He found this helped him rise above the suffering of the moment, almost as if it were already past. This can help you create hope and hope helps motivate you to keep going.</p><p>Too many times we use visualization in a negative way. Instead of visualizing what will happen when the problem is solved successfully, we visualize the problem not being solved. We “see”  all the catastrophes that could happen, how the problem could blow up and destroy all we value, and our devastation. That tends to destroy hope and demotivate us to work on the problem. Instead we are stuck in a fight, flight or paralysis reaction.</p><p>A second way to use this tool is to visualize the solutions being carried out. See as much detail as you can. If barriers come up, consider how to cope with them. Visualization is effective practice, almost as effective as actually doing the activity.</p><p>Simplification</p><p>Break the problem down into smaller problems. For example, if your problem is that you have to get an important application turned in and you only have a couple of days to do it, make a list of the steps you need to take. Then for each step, look at what you need to do. Perhaps you need three references. How can you get the references in the fastest way possible? Consider each step in the same way. Recognize your successes.</p><p>Instead of looking at the goal, which could be overwhelming, looking at each step makes the process seem possible.</p><p>Remember that any new skill, as well as overcoming fear, takes practice.</p>

<p>Many of us carry a burden that consumes a lot of energy: we feel responsible for the happiness of others, even when it’s not our job to worry about that. The phenomenon comes in many shapes, and often goes back to early childhood experiences and the role we played in the family. One of my clients, let’s call her Rose, became aware of her own dynamic after a visit with her mother, who she hadn’t seen in many years. She was the oldest child in the family and wasn’t just expected to take care of her younger brothers when she got older, she was also the designated person to sooth her mother, who constantly worried about the two boys and how they would make their way. Later in life, Rose got used to taking responsibility for her siblings’ monetary problems, since they seemed incapable of holding a job and planning for their own financial security. Her brothers’ inability to take care of themselves became a heavy burden, and it took years for her to develop the courage to end their emotional and financial dependency of her. But the same kind of burden can arise even in families where one child was rejected and seemingly released of the responsibility to please one or both parents. Farrah, an attractive woman in her mid thirties, had disappointed her father terribly: after her two sisters were born, she was supposed to be a boy and the heir of the family business. Useless to her father’s agenda, he rejected her emotionally and neglected to pay much attention to her during her upbringing. She learned that he wouldn’t take any interest in what she achieved, and stopped looking to him for support. Farrah grew up to become a fiercely independent woman who relied solely on her own emotional resources. She did not trust anybody’s judgement other than her own, and was incapable of negotiating compromises in any of her relationships. Despite her seemingly independent existence, she unconsciously had always felt responsible for her father’s unhappiness and worked towards pleasing him. As a teenager, she dressed in boys’ clothes and imitated the way her male peers talked to each other. Even though the relationship to her dad was never close, she picked a profession she knew he respected. Because he was never able to make a lot of money, she made sure that she was well off herself. The pattern continued with all older men in her life. To her male professors, she was the hardest working student in the class. To her bosses, she was the most reliable employee. Even her tennis coach never had to complain about a lesson missed. It took Farrah a long time to understand that she always felt responsible for the happiness of the men in her life, and rarely thought about what made herself happy, until a personal crisis forced her to look at her psychological conditioning. In this way, a crisis turns into a chance to examine our own minds, and a potential turning point in our life to look out for our own happiness.</p>
